"Darkling" is the common name for any humanoid ranging from impish goblins to gruesome orcs to loathsome trolls to monstrous ogres and giants. Most are human-sized or smaller with dark skin, a thick but closely cropped covering of hair or fur, with animalistic faces (darklings tend to have canine or simian or other mammalian featured faces), hands, feet, and stances. Said to be the children of the Path of Night, darklings often live in the dark corners of the Realm staying in deep forest, wilderness, swamps, caves, and mountains. For the most part, darklings stay clear of humanity and civilization, the soldiers and guards that cities bring, and the powers of good. However, at times, hunger or greed or even curiosity bring darklings and humans together in conflict.

The simplest of darklings are the lesser darklings--full of foolhardiness, greed for treasure, child-like intelligence, superstitions, and often all too willing to serve those with power. Lesser darklings are often the toadies, the foot soldiers, and the yes-men of the Path of Night.


Animal Lore 1

Lesser darklings are as strong as most normal humans and often possess a variety of woodland and stealth-based skills. They are organized roughly into clans. Lesser darklings are known for their cunning, their speed, and their light step.

Ethos: quick, nervous, stealthy, greedy, curious, at times cowardly, simple, instinctive, eager, superstitious, respectful of power

Weapons: Lesser darklings usually use small, Light weapons or missiles. If pressed, darklings can use their teeth and claws.

Animal Lore 2

Toughness: Lesser darklings can possess normal humanoid hits to around 12 Hit Points (Constitution).

Common Skills: Aid, Animal Lore, Climbing, Concealing, Looting, Pick Pocket, Plant Lore, Survival, Tracking, Waylay

Animal Lore 3

Quickness: Lesser darklings also often possess 2 to 8 Feats of Speed.

Uncommon Skills: Armorsmithing, Astrology, Feat of Strength, Feat of Will, Feign Death, Find/Remove Traps, Immunities, Killing Strike, Lock Picking, Poison Lore, Streetwise, Weaponsmithing

Animal Lore 5

Magic: Some lesser darklings have the talent to wield magic (generally 1st through 4th circles). Most talents are usually in Animal, Plant, and Elemental magics. Darklings tend to shun Spirit magics (unless they truly serve the Path of Black).

Misticism: Some lesser darklings have the spirit for misticism. Their ability for misticism is greater than their ability for magic.
