Like their white, irridescent cousins, black pearls are simply pearls made by dark or black-shelled oysters. Black pearls derive their lustrous color from the greyish-black nacre of the oyster shell. There are many different shades of black. Some black pearls are naturally occuring; others have been farmed by skilled artisans.

Mineral Lore 1

Black pearls are far more rare than white pearls. They are often a favorite among jewelry makers.

Mineral Lore 3

Black pearls come from warm waters, particularly around Asara and Teer.

Mineral Lore 6 / Magic Lore 3 / Mistic Lore 3

Black pearls are often desired by mages and mistics. They are often used in spells involving protection, charms (particularly love), and luck. Black pearls, because they are "opposite" their white counterparts, are often chosen for dark magics and misticism.

Mineral Lore 8 / Magic Lore 7 / Mistic Lore 7 / Legend Lore 7

As if pulled from legend, the most famous black pearl is called "Cwyffynian's Belt Stone," which is currently kept in the Silver Treasury of the Curi city of LLeander. The stone is actually a black pearl. No one is certain who Cwyffynian is -- his name is lost to legend, or if the stone actually fit a belt. At rest, the pearl is nearly the size of a large apple. The belt stone has the ability to change size, though unpredictably. It has no other properties that can be discerned; it is felt that the pearl must be rejoined to its missing belt for its true magic to be revealed.
