Darkhigh is a small city on the northern shore of Darksea. It is considered cousin to Darkwell and is similarly designed in heavy, dark gray stone. Though smaller than Darkwell, with only half the population, Darkhigh still boasts a keep-like outer wall and a massive keep at its center. Cold, often foggy, and grim, Darkhigh lacks the constant flow of trade and color possessed by Darkwell.
Darkhigh serves as a trading post for and a watchful eye on the mountains and wilderness to the north and east. It is the only major stop between Darkwell and the mountainous city of Sanctar. Darkhigh is said to be built near or on the location of the famed Battle of Litas Noc, the Battle of the Shores of Night, the decisive battle that ended the First Age of Heroes where good triumphed over evil. In fact, the Library of Darkhigh possesses a museum dedicated to Litas Noc.
The Wardens of Dawn arrive in Darkhigh nearly a week after leaving Darkwell. The travel was fast along the road and the weather was for the most part cooperative. Reaching Darkhigh, tired and dirty, the party boards themselves in a moderately priced inn called The Laughing Fountain. The innkeep is a bright, humorous, and affable woman named Aderica Drumais; she is in her late forties, plump, graying hair, and Tausan features.
The party plans only to stay a night or two at the most before trekking on toward the mountains south of Sanctar. No one speaks in detail of their plans; most simply say they are pressing on toward Sanctar if anyone asks.
A small number of the party takes the four "Dragonslayers," the children to the Hall of the Guardians of the Shield. The task is grim and distressing particularly for Sir Drummond. During the trip, the remaining children, complaining and struggling, eventually acquiesced; their powers strangely failed them shortly after their capture. Lisette and Prisette are delivered into the custody of the Guardians and House of Healers, who guarantee to care for them and see that they are returned to their families in Darkwell. The bodies of Anthon and Okin are also taken to the Guardians; they too will be returned to Darkwell.
The Guardians of the Shield and the House of Healers require a number of the Wardens to make statements about the encounter with the four children in the wilds of Icuna, the "battle" with them, and the grim end result. The Guardians require Sir Drummond, Mage Valerius, and Tracker Deoannsa to report. Statements are asked from anyone else with anything to share, reveal, confess, or repudiate.
