Some confusion has arisen about how these three skills work together. Pickpocketing something that is concealed, etc. Could you post a solid ruling on the detail of how these three skills work?

Re: Questions about Looting/Concealing/Pickpocket

I am changing the last paragraph of Concealing to read:
"To conceal an objectmainly from the skill Lootingthe player simply hides the object on his or her person as usual. Objects that normally would not be easily concealed (e.g. something too large, not enough clothing) cannot be hidden. Again, the time required to use Concealing is represented by a count. Once the item is hidden, it cannot be found by physical search and can only be found by a Looting skill greater than the characters Concealing level. Without Looting, Concealing used by itself to find a hidden object on another person can only be used to look through pouches and bags. See the skill Looting for more details. Once the item is removed from hiding, the player must take the time to hide it again. Magical or mistical items can be found via detection or divination." Will be posting an errata PDF soon. ED

Now that I look at this triad of skills, Looting/Concealing/PickPocket, I'm going to probably rewrite their descriptions more fully to include how the three skills interact more accurately.

Re: Questions about Looting/Concealing/Pickpocket
Quote:I would like to iterate this detail in the description of Concealing. I have noticed on occasion people trying to conceal objects that are TOO LARGE to conceal. Concealing, in general, is for small items that would easily fit in a pocket, up a sleeve, in a boot. Bulging items, oversized items, objects that would be conspicuous even under a cloak cannot be concealed. For example, a number of people while carrying the Daggers of Lake Medyri had them Concealed on their person. The prop is obviously "bigger" or more "massive" than a real dagger would be. However, if you're costuming is not conducive to hiding items, then you stretch the limits of the Concealing skill. Be conscious that the skill isn't magical concealing; it must be physically possible to hid the item on you. People might consider adding to their costuming or carrying a pack. Furthermore, if you are given an item in-game and have not received a transferable card, please see me at an event or email me at newarchaea*yahoo.com. Furthermore, if you have a transferable card but NO PROP, then one must be made or provided. IF YOU ARE MISSING EITHER CARD or PROP, then the item is considered out-of-play. Quote:Finally, I have decided that I am going to disallow a character to conceal an item on another person with any success. Specific situations may pass, but in general, I think that it would be hard to conceal an item on another person and have that thing remain concealed since the person does not have the skill (or as high a skill). I argue that part of concealing is knowing how to hold your body, to move without revealing the item, and to keep the item safely concealed in its location. A person that does not have the skill cannot do this with much success. Now, concealing an item in a bag or a pack or in the woods is different because the concealment is relatively static. Please keep this in mind. ED

Shall bags and packs count as a seperate looting location? I typically play it so that the bags on my belt count for the torso looting location. Could you elaborate on how you would like to see that played?
Also, I beleave a lvl 1 concealed item negates pickpocket. I know it did in the old edition but might have changed. Could you elaborate on this as well. thanks Shawn |

Re: Questions about Looting/Concealing/Pickpocket

Generally, weapons, pouches, bags are considered part of the Torso hit location and are "searched" during the use of the Looting skill when the Torso is searched. However, if a bag is thrown or dropped apart from the searched creature, then it in a sense becomes a separate "location."
As it stands, nothing has changed and is quite clear in the rulebook, a Concealed item cannot be Pick Pocketed. Furthermore, remember that Pick Pocket requires that you know roughly that the item is there. So, that stands for now. I intend to revamp Concealing/Looting/Pick Pocket so that they build on/interact with one another more. More to come. |
