but it does not show a glaive, but a halberd or poleaxe. I was thinking of something along the lines of the 'Black Glaive" from Darkon.
Is this even an option in Archaea? Thanks for the input,
Jeff/Vistariil.

I was thinking about making a glaive, and was wanting to know how large it would have to be to deliver 'mortal' damage with a slash. I looked at the pdf:

Mortal polearms, I believe need to be 6' in total length. I will make sure to update the weapon's figure. As for the blade of the glaive, I would rule a minimum of 18" in length at least (if not a bit longer). A "black glaive" built for Darkon will most likely pass in Archaea.

Okay, thanks for the info. I was going to make the blade even longer than 18" and be sure to pad up the haft.

P.S. Ed, did you notice that I tried to look up the information on my own before asking?

The rule in darkon for a Glaive is 18"-24" blade for a white (or critical) hit and 30"-36" blade blade for a black (or mortal) hit. The black weapon version must also have 24" of padded shaft and then hand grips, weapon lenth not to exceed 9' Basically you want to pad anywhere your hands aren't going to be.
Scott PS I will offer again to all, if you need a place to make a mess, there is plenty of room in my garage, and I can assist with the manufacturing...... |

Silly glaive rules, A glavie in Darkon is a great sword without a hilt basically.

What the heck does that mean?
A glaive is a polearm weapon. Long haft. Long blade, often curved. But a greatsword on a stick is not exactly what I would imagine is the way to go... ED

I intend to make something that looks something like a naginata. It will have a haft of between 6 and 7 feet and will be well padded and with a stabbing tip. I doubt it will look much like a greatsword at all. Thanks for the input.

actually great sword on a stick would be a fair assesment for what they look like.....

I guess I should clarify, I don't necessarily care if they are Darkon-like glaives. I figure if the weapon is the length of a poleaxe with a large enough blade, it counts as Mortal. Imagining a greatsword at the end of a big stick just seems wrong (and frankly dangerous) to me. Build as you see fit and we'll see if it passes when it appears on the field.

A Darkon glaive is far from a greatsword attached to a pole.
The glaives seen on the Darkon battlefield are long, 7-9 foot weapons with an average two foot long, five inch wide, two to three inch thick striking surface rectangular head. At least two feet of the shaft past the striking head is well padded so a missed shot hits like a quarterstaff. A pommel also keeps the other end safe, and some players will even pad the entire length of the shaft. More accurately, a Darkon glaive would be a mortal weapon with the dimensions of a somewhat longer pole arm, but with the body of a quarterstaff and the head of a shortsword. Wielding said weapon would be like wielding a quarterstaff/spear hybrid, quite safe unless you're doing something you're not supposed to. |
