What's the damage inflicted by a flail when struck to an unarmored head?

Flails have not been very popular since I have been playing.
My brief experience with them left my unimpressed. I found them harder to control, and quite tough to hit a specific area. They may become more popular if the number of shield bearers rises. One of their main advantages is their ability to wrap around an object, and still count as a hit. They also force a shield to guard a larger area, and therefore would make it easier to get to feint the shield. |

Flails I think are more popular in battlefield games. My experience is that flails are the coup de grace weapon of choice.
Darkon has flails dealing the weakest damage (yellow for bludgeoning, equivalent to light), except for headstrikes which are lethal. That combined with the mass shield bearers as you noted, and being used as surprise attack weapons for pikemen, flails are something to respect. However in Archaea, I'd strongly suspect them more in the hands of NPCs for Waylay strikes. |

Ouchies! X_X Hit not the April in the head if you please.
Besides the blinding yuckiness, you'd probably mess up Igraine's hair. Cardinal sin that I think, punishable by death in at least 3 provinces. ~Truth~Honor~Compassion~

I assume when people speak of "flails" that they really mean "morning stars" -- similar weapons, different design. Archaea consciously removed the flail simply for balance sake (and for annoyance sake). The morning star is shorter than a flail (usually by up to 6") and is generally more difficult to control. Plus, a round shape, it seems to me, is a bit more forgiving than a tube (which tends to pack pretty hard in the end by the time fighting is done and hurts). I've fought with both and been hit many times by both. I prefer the morning star. Those that can use them effectively deserve to wield one of the only head legal weapons in game.

A flail that packs at the end is poorly made. Of course, back in the day, people were still suggesting using bits of foam to pad flail and morningstar heads. That was foolish. A roll of open-cell tends to work ever so much better.
I've done a few other things that have made flails less than gentle weapons (No, I'll not list them). Other than those, however, flails are as safe as morningstars. Their real advantage isn't the 6" reach... it's their speed. They do tend to be faster. -Mamoon ben Rasheen
